CraneSafe NSW was launched in March 2003. It is a voluntary assessment
program initiated by the NSW mobile crane industry.
CraneSafe NSW administers the program and it is guided by a Steering
Committee consisting of representatives from the Crane Industry
Council of Australia, Crane Association of NSW and the CFMEU.
Independent, competent persons, approved by the Committee (not
CraneSafe) will carry out annual inspections and issue the certificates.
While the program is voluntary, crane owners and users in NSW have
a duty of care under the NSW OH&S Act 2000 to ensure that the
mobile cranes are in a safe condition. Part of that duty of care
requires that mobile cranes with a capacity greater than 10T be
registered annually with WorkCover NSW. As part of the registration
process, the person in control/ owner of the crane must make a statement
that the crane has been maintained and is safe to operate. WorkCover
would expect that the crane is inspected and maintained in accordance
with the requirements in the Australian Standard for the safe use
of mobile cranes. The CraneSafe assessment, which aligns with the
Australian Standard 12- month inspection criteria, can assist a
person in making that statement.
Pace Cranes currently have 2 CraneSafe endorsed assessors.
